Best non-toxic paint options for a budget-friendly home makeover

Hey everyone! :herb: I’m in the middle of giving my living room a fresh, new look and, as always, I’m committed to keeping it as eco-friendly as possible. This time around, I’m on a tighter budget, which has me exploring some cost-effective, non-toxic paint options. I’ve previously used Earthborn Paints and absolutely loved their claypaint for its breathability and rich, matte finish. It worked wonders on my old plaster walls, but I’m curious about other options that might be easier on the wallet.

I’ve heard good things about Eco Paints and their water-based emulsions, especially for woodwork and previously painted surfaces. Has anyone tried them? How do they compare in terms of coverage and durability? Also, I’m considering Auro Organic Paints for their natural ingredients and low environmental impact, but I’m a bit concerned about the price point. If you’ve used Auro, was it worth the investment?

I’d love to hear about your experiences with these or any other brands. What’s your go-to non-toxic paint for a budget-friendly makeover? Any tips on where to find the best deals or how to maximize coverage to save on costs? Let’s share our knowledge and help each other make our homes beautiful and sustainable! :art::green_heart:

Hey EcoPainter88! :seedling: I’ve been on a similar journey to find budget-friendly, non-toxic paints and stumbled upon BioShield Paints. They offer a range of eco-friendly options that are surprisingly affordable. I used their Clay Paint for my kitchen and was impressed by the coverage and how it held up over time. It’s also great for those with allergies, as it’s free from synthetic solvents. Definitely worth checking out!

@GreenThumb99 Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve heard of BioShield but haven’t tried them yet. How many coats did you need for full coverage? And did you find it easy to apply?

@EcoPainter88 I managed with two coats, which I think is pretty standard. Application was a breeze – it went on smoothly with a roller. Just make sure to stir it well before use, as the natural ingredients can settle. Also, the drying time was quicker than I expected, which was a bonus!

I’ve been using Eco Paints for a while now, and I must say, their water-based emulsion is fantastic for woodwork. It dries to a really durable finish, and the color options are lovely. I painted my bookshelves with it, and they’ve held up really well against daily wear and tear. Plus, it’s reasonably priced, which is always a win!

@SandyShore23 That’s great to hear! I’ve been considering Eco Paints for some furniture projects. Did you need to use a primer, or does it adhere well on its own?

@EcoPainter88 I didn’t use a primer, and it adhered beautifully. Just make sure the surface is clean and dry before you start. I lightly sanded my shelves to ensure the paint would stick well, and it worked like a charm!

I’ve tried Auro Organic Paints for my living room, and while they are on the pricier side, the quality is unmatched. The depth of color and the finish are just stunning. It’s a bit of an investment, but considering the environmental impact and the fact that a little goes a long way, I think it’s worth it. Plus, knowing that I’m not exposing my family to harmful chemicals is priceless.

@LeafyLane45 That’s exactly what I needed to hear! I’m willing to invest a bit more for quality and safety. Did you find the application process straightforward? Any tips for a first-time user?

@EcoPainter88 Absolutely! The application was straightforward, but I’d recommend using a good quality brush or roller to get the best finish. Also, Auro paints have a different consistency than conventional paints, so take your time to get used to it. The results are definitely worth the effort!

I tried Auro Organic Paints last year for my bedroom makeover, and while they are a bit pricier, the quality is unmatched. The colors are vibrant, and the paint has this unique texture that really adds depth to the walls. It’s a bit of an investment, but if you’re looking for something that’s both eco-friendly and luxurious, it’s worth every penny. That’s great to hear about Eco Paints! I’ve been on the fence about trying them out, but your experience with the durability on woodwork is convincing. I’m also curious about how it performs on walls. Have you tried it there? I’m looking for something that can handle a bit of moisture since my living room tends to get a bit humid.

I tried Auro Organic Paints for my kitchen cabinets, and I have to say, the finish is incredible. It’s true, they’re not the cheapest, but the quality and the peace of mind knowing it’s non-toxic make it worth it for me. I found that a little goes a long way, so in the end, it might not be as expensive as you think.

Has anyone tried mixing their own paints? I’ve been experimenting with natural pigments and a base of lime or chalk paint. It’s a bit of a process, but it’s super cheap and you can customize the colors exactly how you want them. Plus, it’s about as eco-friendly as you can get. Just a thought for those who are really into DIY.

I’m all about Earthborn Paints too. Their claypaint is amazing, and I love that it’s breathable. It’s perfect for older homes with plaster walls. I’ve found that buying in bulk can save you some money, and sometimes they have sales or discounts if you sign up for their newsletter. Worth keeping an eye out for those deals.
