Hey everyone!
I’ve been diving deep into the world of natural paints for my latest home renovation project, and I’m super excited about the possibilities. I’ve been experimenting with lime wash for exterior walls and absolutely love the breathability and the unique, matte finish it gives. But here’s the thing – I’m now considering using it indoors, especially in my living room, to maintain that eco-friendly vibe throughout the house.
I’ve used a couple of eco-friendly paints before, like the Earthborn Claypaint in my bedroom, which was a dream to apply and has held up beautifully. However, I’m curious about lime wash’s compatibility with interior walls. I’ve read it’s great for regulating humidity and has antibacterial properties, which sounds perfect for a healthy home environment. But, I’m a bit concerned about the application process indoors and how it might differ from outdoor use.
Has anyone here tried using lime wash indoors? I’d love to hear about your experiences – the good, the bad, and the messy! Did you find it easy to apply? How does it hold up over time, especially in high-traffic areas? And most importantly, did it meet your expectations for creating a sustainable and healthy living space? Let’s share our stories and tips for making our homes greener, one wall at a time!
I’ve used lime wash indoors in my bathroom and kitchen, and I must say, the results were fantastic! The humidity regulation is a game-changer, especially in the bathroom. It was a bit tricky to apply at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s quite straightforward. Just make sure to protect your floors and furniture, as it can get messy. Over time, it’s held up really well, even in high-traffic areas. Definitely recommend giving it a try!

@GreenThumb99 Thanks for sharing your experience! It’s great to hear that it works well in high-humidity areas. Did you notice any difference in application between the bathroom and kitchen? Also, did you use any specific brand of lime wash?

I tried lime wash in my living room, and while I love the aesthetic it brings, I found it a bit challenging to maintain. It tends to mark easily, so if you have kids or pets, you might want to think twice. However, the antibacterial properties are a huge plus, and it does make the room feel fresher. Just my two cents!

@NatureLover23 That’s a good point about maintenance. I do have a dog, so I’ll have to consider that. Did you use any protective coating over the lime wash to help with the marks?

Lime wash indoors can be stunning, but preparation is key. Make sure your walls are properly primed and that you’re applying it in thin layers. It’s also worth noting that lime wash can lighten as it dries, so test your color on a small section first. I used LimeWorks.us for my project, and their product was top-notch. The finish is breathable and has a beautiful, soft texture that really adds character to a room.

@DIYMaster Thanks for the brand recommendation and the tip about the color lightening. I’ll definitely do a test patch first. How many coats did you end up applying for full coverage?

I’m all for using natural materials, but I found lime wash to be a bit too high-maintenance for my taste. It’s beautiful, but it requires a specific kind of care that I wasn’t prepared for. If you’re up for the challenge, though, it can really transform a space. Just make sure you’re ready for the upkeep!

@SustainablyMe I appreciate the honesty. What kind of maintenance did you find most challenging? Was it the cleaning, or something else?

Lime wash indoors can create a truly unique and artisanal look. I’ve used it in several projects, and the key is in the application technique. Using a natural bristle brush and applying in a cross-hatch pattern can enhance the texture and depth of the finish. It’s a bit more labor-intensive, but the results are worth it. Plus, the eco-friendly aspect is a huge bonus for those of us looking to reduce our environmental impact.

@ArtisanCraftsman The cross-hatch pattern sounds intriguing! Did you find that it helped with coverage as well, or was it purely for aesthetic purposes?

I’ve been curious about lime wash for a while now, especially for indoor use. Your experience in the bathroom and kitchen sounds promising. I’m a bit worried about the initial application though. Did you have to do any special prep work on your walls before applying the lime wash? Also, how does it handle cleaning? I’ve got kids, so walls that can’t be wiped down are a no-go for me.

That’s awesome to hear about your positive experience with lime wash indoors! I’ve been on the fence about trying it in my living room, mainly because I’m concerned about the color fading over time. Did you notice any changes in the color or finish after a while? Also, did you use any particular brand or mix your own lime wash? I’m all for DIY, but I don’t want to mess it up.

I’ve used lime wash indoors and it turned out amazing. The key is in the prep work, like the comment above mentioned. I didn’t use a primer but made sure the walls were clean and dry. The color did lighten a bit, but I actually liked the final shade better. It’s been a year, and it still looks fresh. Definitely recommend giving it a try.

Lime wash indoors? Sounds risky to me. I tried it in my bathroom thinking the antibacterial properties would be great, but the humidity made it peel. Maybe it works better in less humid areas, but I had to repaint with a regular paint. Not sure I’d try it again indoors.

I love the idea of using lime wash indoors for its eco-friendliness and health benefits. I haven’t tried it yet, but after reading these comments, I’m thinking of testing it in my kitchen. Does anyone know if it’s food-safe or if there are any special considerations for using it around food prep areas?

Used lime wash in my living room and it’s been a game-changer. The texture and finish are unlike anything you’d get with regular paint. It does require some getting used to during application, but the results are worth it. Plus, it’s held up well against my kids’ ‘art projects’ on the walls.

I’m curious about the smell. Does lime wash have a strong odor when applied indoors? I’m sensitive to smells and would love to use it in my home office if it’s not too overpowering. Also, how long does it take to dry completely?

I’ve used lime wash in my kitchen and honestly, it’s been a game-changer. The humidity regulation is no joke, especially in a space where steam is a constant. The application was a bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty straightforward. Just make sure you protect your floors and furniture because it can get messy. Over time, it’s held up well, but I do touch up areas that get a lot of wear and tear. It’s definitely worth the effort for the aesthetic and health benefits.

I tried lime wash in my bathroom thinking it would be perfect for the moisture, but it didn’t go as planned. The finish looked amazing at first, but it started to wear off in high humidity areas faster than I expected. I ended up switching to a different eco-friendly paint that’s more suited for wet environments. Lime wash is beautiful, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. You really need to consider the specific conditions of each room before committing.
