Discovering the benefits of using natural pigments in eco-friendly paints

Hey everyone! :herb: I’ve been on a mission to make my home more eco-friendly, and my latest project has been repainting the walls. I stumbled upon the world of natural pigments and was blown away by the vibrant colors you can achieve without synthetic chemicals. I decided to try out EarthHue Natural Paints for my living room, and the experience was eye-opening. Not only did the paint smell like… well, nothing (a huge plus), but the application was smoother than I expected. I used a clay-based paint for my walls, which are plaster, and it adhered beautifully, giving a rich, matte finish that really brings out the natural light in the room.

What really got me thinking was the sustainability aspect. These paints are made from renewable resources, and the pigments are derived from minerals and plants, which means they’re biodegradable and have a lower environmental impact. I’ve tried a couple of eco-friendly paints before, but none that used natural pigments. It’s fascinating how these ancient methods are making a comeback in modern homes.

I’m curious, has anyone else experimented with natural pigments in their DIY projects? What brands have you tried, and how did they hold up over time? Also, for those who’ve worked with different surfaces, how do natural pigment paints perform on wood or metal compared to traditional paints? Let’s share our experiences and tips for anyone looking to make the switch to more sustainable painting options!

Hey @GreenThumbJenny, your project sounds amazing! I’ve been using BioShield Paints for a while now, and I’m really impressed with their durability and the depth of color you can achieve with natural pigments. They have a range of products for different surfaces, including wood and metal. I used their clay paint on my kitchen walls, and it’s held up beautifully against moisture and stains. It’s great to see more people turning to sustainable options!

I’m curious about the coverage of these natural pigment paints. @GreenThumbJenny, did you find that you needed more coats compared to traditional paints? Also, how do they fare in terms of fading over time, especially in rooms that get a lot of sunlight?

@EcoWarriorDave, thanks for sharing your experience with BioShield Paints! It’s encouraging to hear about their durability, especially in a kitchen setting. I’ll definitely check them out for my next project. Have you tried any of their finishes on wood? I’m considering repainting some furniture and would love to hear your thoughts.

@PaintLover99, great questions! I found that the coverage was pretty comparable to traditional paints, maybe just a slight difference. I did two coats for full opacity, which is standard for most paints, in my experience. As for fading, it’s only been a few months, but so far, so good! The room gets a decent amount of sunlight, and the colors are as vibrant as ever. I’ll keep an eye on it and update if I notice any changes.

Hey, I’ve been curious about natural pigments too! I tried Auro Paints for my bedroom and was really impressed. The colors are so vibrant and they have this unique depth that synthetic paints just can’t match. Plus, knowing it’s better for the environment makes me feel good about my choice. Have you noticed any difference in how the paint ages compared to traditional paints?

I’ve been using Eco Paints for a while now, especially for my outdoor furniture. The natural pigments really stand up to the elements better than I expected. I was worried about fading, but it’s been a year and the colors are still as vivid as the day I painted them. It’s great to see more people talking about sustainable options. Have you tried any natural pigment paints on outdoor projects?

Hey! I tried EarthHue Natural Paints too, and I was pleasantly surprised by the coverage. I only needed two coats for a solid finish, which is pretty much on par with the traditional paints I’ve used. As for fading, I haven’t noticed any significant changes, and it’s been about a year. My living room gets a lot of sunlight, so I was worried, but so far, so good. Have you considered the type of finish? I wonder if that affects fading.

I’ve been using natural pigment paints for a while now, and I agree, the coverage is decent. But, I did find that on darker colors, sometimes an extra coat is necessary to get that even look. Fading-wise, I’ve had a different experience. In my sunroom, which gets direct sunlight most of the day, I noticed some fading after six months. I used a brand called Nature’s Palette. Maybe it’s the brand or the specific pigment? Have you tried any UV protectant finishes with natural paints?

I’ve dabbled in DIY natural paints too. The trick I found is to use a base like linseed oil or even egg yolk for a binder. It’s fascinating how different binders can change the texture and finish. Have you experimented with different binders?

Making your own paint sounds like a lot of work, but I bet it’s worth it for the unique colors. I’ve been using EarthHue Natural Paints and love the eco-friendly aspect, but there’s something special about creating something from scratch. Do you find the colors fade over time?

I tried making natural paint once, but it didn’t adhere well to my wooden furniture. Maybe I didn’t prepare the surface correctly. Any tips for prepping wood before applying homemade natural paint?
