How to create textured walls using clay paint: A beginner's guide

Hey everyone! :herb: I’ve recently embarked on a journey to make my home more eco-friendly, starting with the walls. I stumbled upon clay paint and was instantly intrigued by its natural composition and the unique texture it can add to walls. After some research, I decided to try out the Earthborn Claypaint for my living room. The application process was a bit of a learning curve, but the results were worth it! The paint gave my walls a beautiful, soft texture that feels so natural and warm.

I’m curious, has anyone else experimented with clay paint for textured walls? What brands have you tried, and how did you find the application process? I used a trowel for mine, but I’ve heard some people use brushes or even sponges for different effects. Also, how do you think clay paint compares to other eco-friendly paints you’ve used in terms of durability and finish?

Let’s share our experiences and tips for beginners looking to dive into the world of natural paints. What’s your go-to method for creating texture, and do you have any advice for someone just starting out with clay paint? Looking forward to hearing your stories and suggestions!

Hey @EcoDaisy, great topic! I’ve been using Earthborn Claypaint for a couple of years now and absolutely love the texture it gives. I found that using a sponge creates a more subtle texture compared to a trowel, which is perfect for bedrooms. Have you tried mixing different application tools for varied textures in the same room?

I’m just starting out with eco-friendly paints and this is super helpful! Does anyone know if clay paint works well on previously painted walls? I’m worried about adhesion issues.

@GreenThumb88, that’s a great idea! I haven’t tried mixing tools yet, but I’m definitely going to experiment with a sponge in my next project. Thanks for the tip!

@NatureLover23, clay paint generally adheres well to previously painted walls, but it’s crucial to ensure the surface is clean and matte. A light sanding can help improve adhesion. Always do a patch test first!

I tried Auro Clay Paint for my kitchen and was amazed by the durability. It’s been a year, and the walls still look fresh despite the steam and occasional splashes. For texture, I used a combination of trowel and brush, which gave a really unique look. Highly recommend giving it a try!

Hey, I’ve been curious about clay paint too! I haven’t tried Earthborn yet, but I used a different brand last year for my kitchen. The texture was amazing, but I found it a bit tricky to apply evenly. I ended up using a combination of a brush for the edges and a roller for the main areas. It gave a nice, even texture that wasn’t too overwhelming. How do you deal with the drying time? I noticed it dries slower than regular paint, which was a bit of a challenge for me.

I’ve been using clay paint for a while now, and I totally agree about the texture. It’s so unique and adds a lot of character to a room. I’ve experimented with different tools too, and I found that using a trowel gives a more dramatic texture, which I love for feature walls. As for durability, I think it holds up pretty well, especially in low-traffic areas. Have you noticed any issues with touch-ups? I’m always a bit nervous about matching the texture when I need to do small repairs.

Hey, I’ve used clay paint over previously painted walls and it worked out fine for me. The key is to make sure the surface is clean and maybe give it a light sanding for better adhesion. I used Earthborn Claypaint too, and it adhered well without any issues. Just make sure to follow the prep instructions on the paint can.

I had a bit of a different experience. When I tried applying clay paint over a glossy finish, it didn’t stick well. I ended up having to use a primer first. So, it really depends on the type of paint that’s already on your walls. If it’s matte, you’re probably good to go, but if it’s glossy, you might need to prep the surface more.

I’m curious about the cleanup process with clay paint. Since it’s natural, does it come off brushes and tools easily? I’m all for eco-friendly options, but I don’t want to spend hours cleaning up after painting. Also, does anyone know if it’s safe to use around pets? I’ve got a couple of cats that are always curious about what I’m doing.

I’ve been using clay paint for a while now, and I must say, the texture it adds to walls is incomparable. I tried the Earthborn Claypaint in my bedroom, and the ambiance it created was just serene. I used a sponge for application, which gave a subtle, soft texture. It’s fascinating how different tools can create such varied effects. For anyone starting out, I’d suggest experimenting on a small patch first to see what tool works best for the texture you’re aiming for.

Interesting to hear about Auro Clay Paint holding up so well in the kitchen. I’ve been considering it for my bathroom but was worried about moisture. Your experience gives me hope. I used Eco Paints in my living room, and while the finish was beautiful, I did notice it needed a touch-up after a year. Maybe it’s time to switch brands. How does Auro handle color fading over time?

I’m all for eco-friendly options, but I found clay paint a bit challenging to work with. The texture is gorgeous, no doubt, but getting an even coat was tricky for me. I used a brush, and while it looked great in some areas, others were patchy. Maybe I need to try a trowel or sponge next time. Any tips for achieving a more uniform look?

The durability of clay paint is a game-changer, especially in high-traffic areas. I used Biofa in my hallway, and it’s been a breeze to clean. The texture adds depth to the walls, making the space feel more dynamic. I’m curious, has anyone tried mixing clay paints to create custom colors? I’m thinking of experimenting with shades for my next project.
