How to properly prepare walls for non-toxic paint application?

Hey everyone! I’ve recently decided to repaint my living room and, as someone deeply committed to green living, I’m leaning towards using non-toxic, natural paints. I’ve been eyeing the Eco-Paint brand, which boasts a zero-VOC formula and is made from natural ingredients. Before I dive in, I want to make sure I’m preparing my walls correctly to ensure the best possible outcome.

In the past, I’ve used BioShield paints for smaller projects and was impressed by their durability and eco-friendliness. However, this is my first time tackling a larger space. I’ve heard that the key to a flawless finish lies in the preparation. I’m planning to clean the walls thoroughly with a mild, natural soap and water solution, followed by sanding to smooth out any imperfections. I’m also considering applying a natural primer, but I’m not sure if it’s necessary for all types of walls.

I’m curious to hear from others who’ve gone down this path. What has been your experience with preparing walls for non-toxic paint? Did you use a primer, and if so, which brand? How did you handle any existing paint or wallpaper? Any tips on ensuring the paint adheres well and lasts? Looking forward to your insights and suggestions!

Hey @EcoPainterJane, great topic! I’ve used Eco-Paint in my home and can vouch for its quality. For wall prep, I followed a similar process: cleaning with a mild soap solution and light sanding. I found that using a natural primer, specifically BioShield’s Clay Paint Primer, made a significant difference in the paint’s adherence and overall finish. It’s especially helpful if you’re transitioning from a darker to a lighter color. Good luck with your project!

I’m also in the process of switching to non-toxic paints and found your post very timely. I haven’t decided on a brand yet, but I’m curious about the sanding part. How fine of a grit did you use? I’m worried about damaging the walls.

@GreenThumb88 Thanks for the tip about BioShield’s Clay Paint Primer! I’ll definitely look into it. Did you find that it helped with coverage over existing paint?

@LeafyLane I used a 120-grit sandpaper for my walls. It’s coarse enough to smooth out imperfections without being too harsh. Just make sure to wipe down the walls after sanding to remove any dust before painting.

I’ve been using Earthborn Paints for a while now and love their eco-friendly approach. For wall prep, I always use their Eco Interior Primer. It’s great for ensuring an even base, especially over previously painted walls. Plus, it’s breathable, which is a bonus for older homes.

@SunnySkies23 I’ve heard good things about Earthborn Paints. How does their primer compare to others in terms of drying time?

@EcoPainterJane The drying time is pretty standard, about 4-6 hours depending on the humidity. I usually apply it in the evening and it’s ready for painting the next morning. Just make sure your room is well-ventilated!

Has anyone tried using Auro Natural Paints? I’m considering them for my next project but would love to hear about others’ experiences with wall prep and application.

@BreezyDays I’ve used Auro for a small bathroom project. Their No. 320 Wall Paint is fantastic, but I found that their No. 142 Primer was essential for the best results. It’s a bit pricier, but the finish is worth it. Just make sure to follow their prep guidelines closely.

Just a quick tip for everyone: when cleaning walls before painting, a mix of vinegar and water works wonders for removing grease and grime without harsh chemicals. It’s my go-to solution for eco-friendly prep!
