How to tackle mold and mildew with eco-friendly paint solutions

Hey everyone! :herb: I’ve been on a mission to make my home as eco-friendly as possible, and my latest challenge has been dealing with mold and mildew in our bathroom. It’s a constant battle, especially with the humidity levels we have here. I’ve tried a few eco-friendly products in the past, like vinegar and tea tree oil solutions, but I’m looking for something more long-lasting that can also add a fresh coat of paint.

I recently stumbled upon Earthborn Paints, which are not only VOC-free but also claim to be mold-resistant. Has anyone tried them? I’m particularly interested in their Claypaint range for its breathability and natural ingredients. I’m curious about how it holds up in high-moisture areas and if it truly resists mold and mildew over time.

Also, I’ve read that the key to preventing mold is not just the paint but ensuring the surface is properly prepared and possibly using a mold-resistant primer. Does anyone have experience with eco-friendly primers that pair well with natural paints?

I’d love to hear your thoughts, experiences, or any other eco-friendly paint solutions you’ve tried for tackling mold and mildew. Let’s share our green living hacks and make our homes healthier for the planet! :earth_africa::green_heart:

Hey @GreenThumbJenny! I’ve been using Earthborn Paints for a couple of years now, and I must say, their Claypaint is a game-changer for high-moisture areas. It’s not just the mold resistance that’s impressive, but also how it allows walls to breathe, reducing condensation and, consequently, mold growth. I applied it in my bathroom, and after two years, I’ve only had to deal with minimal mildew, which was easily wiped away. Definitely recommend giving it a try!

I haven’t tried Earthborn Paints yet, but I’m intrigued! For mold and mildew, I’ve been using a mix of borax and water as a natural solution before painting. It’s eco-friendly and does a decent job at preventing mold. I then use Biofa’s natural paints, which are also VOC-free and have a good reputation for durability in damp conditions. Maybe combining a natural mold treatment with a high-quality eco-paint like Earthborn could be the ultimate solution?

@EcoWarriorDave That’s really encouraging to hear! Did you use any specific primer before applying the Claypaint, or did you apply it directly to the wall? I’m trying to figure out if I need to invest in an eco-friendly primer as well.

@SandyShorelines I’ve heard about borax solutions too! How do you apply it? Do you just mix it with water and spray it on, or is there a specific method you follow? Also, how does Biofa hold up in terms of color options? I’m looking for something that’s not only functional but also offers a good range of colors.

I’ve been on a similar journey to make my home more eco-friendly, especially in battling mold. I found that ensuring proper ventilation is key, alongside using eco-friendly paints. I used Auro’s natural paints in my kitchen and bathroom, and they’ve been fantastic. They offer a mold-resistant additive that you can mix into their paints, which has worked wonders for me. It’s worth looking into if you’re exploring options beyond Earthborn.

@MossyMaven That sounds like a great option! I’ll definitely check out Auro’s range. How was the application process? Did you find it easy to work with, and how’s the coverage? Also, did you use any special brushes or rollers for the natural paint?

@GreenThumbJenny I went straight in with the Claypaint without a primer, and it adhered beautifully. However, if you’re dealing with severe mold issues, an eco-friendly primer might be a good precaution. I’ve heard good things about Eco-Primer from Green Planet Paints. It’s specifically designed to block stains and odors, which could be beneficial in a bathroom setting.

@LeafyLad For the borax solution, I mix 1 cup of borax with 1 gallon of water and apply it with a sponge or spray bottle, letting it sit for a few minutes before wiping it off. As for Biofa, they have a surprisingly wide range of colors! I was able to find the perfect shade for my living room, and it’s held up beautifully over time. Definitely recommend checking out their color chart.

I’ve been using Earthborn Paints for a while now, especially the Claypaint in my bathroom. It’s been a game-changer for me. The breathability really helps with the moisture, and so far, no signs of mold or mildew. I didn’t use a primer, just made sure the walls were clean and dry before painting. It’s worth a shot if you’re looking for something eco-friendly and effective.

That borax and water mix sounds interesting. I might give it a try before my next paint job. I’ve been using Biofa’s natural paints too, and they’re great, but always looking for ways to improve the mold resistance. Do you mix the borax in a specific ratio, or just eyeball it?

I haven’t tried Earthborn Paints yet, but I’m all for eco-friendly solutions. I’ve been using a dehumidifier in my bathroom to tackle the humidity issue, which seems to help with the mold problem. Maybe combining that with a good eco-paint could be the way to go. Has anyone else tried controlling humidity as a way to prevent mold?

I’m a bit skeptical about paints claiming to be mold-resistant. I’ve tried a few in the past, and while they work for a while, the mold always seems to come back. I’m curious about the long-term effectiveness of Earthborn Paints. Has anyone used them for more than a year and can vouch for their durability against mold?

That’s interesting about Auro’s natural paints and the mold-resistant additive. I’ve been curious about additives but wasn’t sure how well they work. How long have you been using it in your kitchen and bathroom? I’m always on the lookout for more eco-friendly solutions, especially ones that can handle high humidity. Also, did you find that the additive changed the paint’s texture or color at all?
