Hey everyone! I’ve been on a mission to make my home as eco-friendly as possible, and my latest project involves repainting the bathroom. Given the high humidity, I’m particularly concerned about mold. I’ve previously used AFM Safecoat for my living room, which was a great VOC-free option, but I’m not sure how it holds up against mold. Has anyone tried ECOS Paints or BioShield for similar situations? I’m curious about their mold resistance and overall durability in damp environments.
Also, I’ve heard that adding certain natural additives can enhance mold resistance. Does anyone have experience with this? I’m all ears for any tips on application techniques or surface prep that might help, especially on previously painted walls. Let’s share our experiences and help each other out with recommendations for the best VOC-free, mold-resistant paints!
I’ve been using ECOS Paints for a couple of years now, and I must say, their performance in damp areas like bathrooms is impressive. Not only are they VOC-free, but they also have a specific line that’s formulated to resist mold and mildew. I applied it in my bathroom, and even after a year, there’s no sign of mold. The key is proper ventilation and surface prep. Make sure to clean the walls thoroughly and maybe even use a mold-killing primer before applying the paint.

I haven’t tried ECOS Paints yet, but I’ve had a great experience with BioShield. Their Aqua Resin Floor & Wall Paint is not only eco-friendly but also has natural anti-fungal properties. It’s a bit pricier, but considering the durability and the fact that it’s safe for my kids, I think it’s worth it. Plus, it comes in a variety of colors, which is a bonus for those of us who care about aesthetics as much as eco-friendliness.

@GreenThumb88 Thanks for the detailed feedback! I was leaning towards ECOS Paints, and your experience just confirms it might be the right choice for my bathroom. Did you use any special techniques for application, or was it pretty straightforward?

@DIYQueen I’m curious about the drying time for BioShield. I have a small bathroom, and I’m worried about the smell lingering for too long. How was your experience with that?

I’ve experimented with adding natural additives like tea tree oil to my paint to enhance mold resistance. It worked pretty well in my laundry room, which is another high-humidity area. However, it’s important to note that this might not be as effective as paints specifically formulated to resist mold. It’s more of a supplementary measure. Also, make sure to test it on a small area first to ensure it doesn’t affect the paint’s consistency or color.

@SunnyDays That’s an interesting approach! I’ve heard about using tea tree oil but was skeptical about its effectiveness. How much did you add per gallon of paint? And did you notice any change in the paint’s texture?

@EcoPainterJane The application was pretty straightforward. I used a roller for the walls and a brush for the edges. The paint has a nice consistency, not too thick or runny, which made the job easier. Just make sure to ventilate the room well during and after painting. I left the fan on for a couple of hours, and the smell was gone by the next day.

@NatureLover The drying time was reasonable, about 4-6 hours to touch and 24 hours to fully cure. The smell was minimal and dissipated quickly, especially with good ventilation. I used a fan and kept the window open, and it was fine by the next morning. It’s definitely one of the less smelly options out there.

That’s great to hear about ECOS Paints! I’ve been considering them for my kitchen, which also gets pretty damp. Did you find that the color stayed true over time, or did it fade at all? Also, how was the coverage? I’m hoping to avoid too many coats.

I’ve been using BioShield for a while now, and I have to say, it’s been a game-changer for my bathroom. Like you mentioned with ECOS, proper ventilation is key. I also found that using a dehumidifier helps a lot. Have you tried any natural additives with your paint? I’ve heard tea tree oil can be effective against mold, but I’m a bit skeptical about how it might affect the paint’s consistency.

I’ve been using ECOS Paints for a while now, especially in my bathroom and kitchen. It’s held up really well against mold, and I haven’t noticed any issues with durability. The application was smooth, and it dried faster than I expected. Definitely recommend giving it a try if you’re looking for a VOC-free option.

That’s interesting about BioShield. I’ve been curious about their products but haven’t taken the plunge yet. How does it handle in terms of coverage? I’ve had issues with some eco-friendly paints requiring multiple coats, which can be a bit of a hassle.

I used AFM Safecoat in my bathroom a couple of years ago, and it’s been great. No mold issues, and it’s held up well despite the humidity. I did make sure to clean and dry the walls thoroughly before applying, which I think helped a lot.

For those considering natural additives, I’ve used grapefruit seed extract in my paint mix. It’s supposed to have anti-fungal properties, and I haven’t had any mold problems since. Just a few drops per gallon, and it didn’t change the paint’s texture or color.

I’m all for eco-friendly paints, but I’m also concerned about the cost. BioShield sounds great, but if it’s significantly more expensive, I might have to think twice. Does anyone know of any budget-friendly options that are still effective against mold?

Adding natural additives like tea tree oil is an interesting idea. I’ve never tried it myself but I’m curious about the long-term effects. Does it alter the paint’s durability or color over time? Might be worth experimenting with in a less visible area first.
