Hey everyone!
I’ve recently taken on the challenge of renovating my 1920s home, and I’m determined to keep it as eco-friendly as possible. This has led me down the rabbit hole of natural paints, especially for the plaster walls that are a staple throughout the house. I’ve tried a couple of brands so far, like Eco-Paint and Earthborn, and while I love their low VOC content and the fact that they’re made from natural ingredients, I’m curious about their durability over time.
Specifically, I’ve applied Eco-Paint’s Claypaint in the living room, which boasts excellent breathability, crucial for old plaster walls. In the bedroom, I went with Earthborn’s Eggshell No.17, attracted by its rich pigment and matte finish. Both have held up well for the past six months, but I’m noticing slight differences in how they handle wear and tear.
I’m reaching out to see if anyone else has experience with these or other eco-friendly paint brands on plaster surfaces. How have they held up in high-traffic areas? Any tips for application or brands you swear by? Let’s share our experiences and help each other make our homes beautiful and sustainable!
Hey @GreenThumbJenny, great topic! I’ve been using Auro Natural Paints on my plaster walls for about two years now. Their No. 142 has been fantastic in high-traffic areas like the hallway. It’s durable, easy to clean, and the color hasn’t faded one bit. Plus, it’s made from natural raw materials, which is a huge win for me. Have you considered giving Auro a try?

Interesting observations, @GreenThumbJenny! I’ve found that the key to durability on plaster isn’t just the paint brand but also the preparation of the surface. Ensuring the plaster is fully cured and using a good primer can make a world of difference. Have you tried any specific primers with Eco-Paint or Earthborn?

@EcoWarriorDave, I haven’t tried Auro Natural Paints yet, but I’m definitely intrigued! How does it handle moisture? My bathroom is next on the list, and I’m a bit nervous about using natural paint in such a humid environment.

@PlasterPro, I completely agree about the importance of surface prep! I used Earthborn’s Primer with their Eggshell No.17 in my kitchen, and it’s held up beautifully against splashes and stains. It’s a bit pricier, but worth it for the peace of mind.

Has anyone tried Biofa Paints? I’ve heard they’re excellent for plaster walls, especially in terms of durability and eco-friendliness. I’m considering them for my living room but would love to hear some firsthand experiences before making the leap.
@NatureLover101, I’ve used Biofa in a couple of rooms. Their Linospeed Oil is fantastic for durability and has a beautiful finish. However, it does take longer to dry compared to water-based paints, so you’ll need a bit of patience. But for the living room, it could be a great choice!

I’m all about keeping things vintage and eco-friendly in my 1950s home. I’ve been experimenting with Lime Paint from Bauwerk Colour on my plaster walls. It’s incredibly breathable and has a unique, chalky finish that really complements the retro vibe. Plus, it’s made from natural lime and minerals. Anyone else tried lime-based paints?

Hey, I’ve been using Biofa paints for my plaster walls and they’ve been holding up pretty well. They’re not as well-known as some other brands, but the quality is there. It’s been about a year, and the color is still vibrant, even in areas that get a lot of sunlight. Might be worth checking out if you’re looking for something different.

I tried Eco-Paint in my kitchen, which is a high-traffic area, and it’s been a mixed bag. The color and finish are great, but I’ve noticed it doesn’t handle moisture as well as I’d hoped. After a few months, I started seeing some peeling near the sink. Maybe it’s just the humidity in my area, but something to consider.
I’m all about Earthborn paints. Used them throughout my house, including on plaster walls, and they’ve been fantastic. The coverage is excellent, and they dry to a really nice finish. Plus, I love that they’re eco-friendly. Haven’t had any issues with durability, even in the hallway and living room.

I went with Farrow & Ball for my plaster walls, and while they’re on the pricier side, the quality is unmatched. The depth of color is incredible, and it’s held up beautifully over the past two years. It’s definitely an investment, but for me, it was worth it.

Interesting to hear about Auro Natural Paints. I’ve been looking for something durable for my entryway, which gets a lot of foot traffic. How does it handle scuffs and marks? I’m also curious about the application process—was it straightforward, or did you need to do anything special for the plaster?
