Hey fellow eco-warriors!
I’m in the middle of giving my kitchen a green makeover and I’ve hit a bit of a crossroads. I’m torn between using an eggshell or semi-gloss finish for my cabinets. I’ve been leaning towards Eco-Safe Paints’ line because they’ve got this amazing zero-VOC formula that’s been a dream to work with so far. Plus, their commitment to sustainability is something I can really get behind.
I’ve previously used their matte finish in my living room, and the coverage was fantastic, not to mention how it really brought out the natural texture of the walls. But kitchens are a whole different ball game, right? I’m thinking about durability and ease of cleaning, especially since my kitchen sees a lot of action. I’ve heard that semi-gloss might be better for withstanding the wear and tear, but I’m worried it might be too shiny for my taste. On the other hand, eggshell has that lovely, subtle sheen but I’m not sure if it’s tough enough for the kitchen environment.
So, I’m turning to you all for some wisdom! Have any of you used Eco-Safe Paints or similar brands for your kitchen cabinets? What finish did you go with and how has it held up? Any tips on application or surface prep would be super helpful too. Let’s share our experiences and help each other make our homes a little greener, one brush stroke at a time!
I’ve been using Eco-Safe Paints for a couple of years now, and I must say, their semi-gloss finish is a game-changer for kitchen cabinets. It’s not just about the shine; it’s the durability and ease of cleaning that really stand out. I’ve had mine for over a year, and they still look as good as new, even with all the cooking and splatters. Definitely recommend going semi-gloss if your kitchen sees a lot of action!

I went with the eggshell finish for my cabinets, also from Eco-Safe Paints, and I love the subtle sheen it gives. It’s not as shiny as semi-gloss, which I prefer, but it’s still pretty durable. I’ve had to clean a few spills and it’s held up well. The key is in the prep work - make sure your cabinets are well-sanded and primed before applying the paint. It makes a huge difference in the finish and longevity.

@PaintLover88 Thanks for the input! The durability aspect is definitely a big plus for semi-gloss. Did you find the shine to be overwhelming at all? I’m trying to keep a balance between functionality and aesthetics.

@NatureNate I agree about the prep work! It’s crucial for any paint job, but especially with natural paints. I used a different brand but also went with eggshell for a more natural look. It’s been great, but I do have to clean it more often than I would with a semi-gloss. Still, I prefer the aesthetic.

Has anyone tried mixing finishes? I was thinking of doing semi-gloss for the lower cabinets and eggshell for the uppers. That way, you get the durability where you need it most and a softer look up top. Just a thought!

@DIYQueen That’s an interesting idea! I hadn’t considered mixing finishes. It could be the perfect compromise. Has anyone else tried this approach? How did it turn out?

I’ve been using Eco-Safe Paints for all my projects, and I have to say, their customer service is as green as their paints! They’re super helpful with any questions about application or choosing the right finish. For kitchens, they actually recommended a satin finish as a middle ground between eggshell and semi-gloss. It’s worth considering if you’re torn between the two.

@EcoExplorer That’s a great tip about the satin finish! I’ll definitely look into that. It sounds like it could be the perfect balance I’m looking for. Thanks for sharing!

I went with eggshell for my kitchen cabinets using Eco-Safe Paints and honestly, it’s been holding up pretty well. The subtle sheen gives it a nice, warm look without being too glossy. Cleaning hasn’t been an issue either; a damp cloth does the trick for most spills. I think it really depends on the vibe you’re going for in your kitchen.

I’m all about that semi-gloss life for kitchen cabinets. The durability is unmatched, especially in a high-traffic area like the kitchen. I used Eco-Safe Paints and the finish has been a breeze to clean. Plus, it adds a bit of brightness to the space, which is great if your kitchen doesn’t get a lot of natural light.

I’ve tried both finishes in different parts of my house, and for the kitchen, semi-gloss is the way to go. It’s not just about the shine; it’s more resistant to moisture and stains, which is crucial in a kitchen setting. Eco-Safe Paints semi-gloss has been a solid choice for me, easy to apply and looks fantastic.
Eggshell finish from Eco-Safe Paints has been my pick for the kitchen. I love the matte look it gives, and it’s surprisingly durable. I was worried about cleaning at first, but it’s been holding up against daily wear and tear. It really depends on your personal preference and how much maintenance you’re willing to do.
I think it’s worth considering the color you’re planning to use as well. Lighter colors in semi-gloss can really brighten up the space, while darker colors in eggshell can add depth without being too shiny. Eco-Safe Paints offers a great range of colors in both finishes, so you can’t really go wrong. Just think about the overall look you’re aiming for.

I’m all about that semi-gloss life for kitchen cabinets. Yeah, it’s a bit shinier, but man, does it make cleaning up a breeze. I’ve got kids, so my kitchen cabinets see a lot of action. Spills, splatters, you name it. The semi-gloss finish from Eco-Safe Paints has been a champ. Just a quick wipe and it’s like nothing happened. Plus, I think the shine adds a nice pop to the kitchen.

Honestly, I think it comes down to personal preference and how much wear and tear your kitchen actually sees. I went with eggshell for a more muted look, and it’s been fine. But I don’t have a super busy kitchen. If you’re cooking up a storm daily, maybe lean towards semi-gloss for the durability. Either way, Eco-Safe Paints is a solid choice. Their zero-VOC formula is a game-changer.
I’ve used both finishes in different parts of my home, and for the kitchen, I’d recommend semi-gloss. It’s just more practical for the messes that happen. But I get the concern about it being too shiny. Maybe test a small area first? Eco-Safe Paints samples are great for that. You can really see how the light plays with the finish before committing.

I’m in the middle of deciding too, and this thread is super helpful. I’m leaning towards eggshell because I want my kitchen to have a cozy vibe, not too clinical with the shine. But I’m worried about the durability. Has anyone tried adding a protective topcoat over the eggshell finish for extra durability?

I think the debate between eggshell and semi-gloss is interesting, but have you guys considered the color? I went with a light sage green in semi-gloss, and it’s stunning. The color really pops with the shine, and it’s so easy to keep clean. Eco-Safe Paints has some amazing eco-friendly colors that could really elevate your kitchen’s look, regardless of the finish.
